Course Name: GEN.702.1 - Path to Promotion: Navigating the Tenure Process for Faculty

Description: Promotion and tenure processes determine whether you, as a faculty member, are able to continue to pursue your career at your current institution, or whether your career progression as a scientist and scholar will require significant career recalibration. This interactive and evidence-based workshop grounded in research findings generated by the NSF-funded Center for Excellence in Faculty Advancement (CEFA) ensures that, as you approach your promotion and tenure process (P&T), you are using state-of-the art evidence grounded in more than 2,000 prior P&T cases across the country to develop your P&T strategy and materials. The CEFA research consortium has collected and analyzed data from 10 universities, including decision making data from more than 2,000 promotion and tenure (P&T) cases and over 10,000 external review letters (ERLs). Drawing on our dataset and published CEFA work, participants will learn the tools and strategies needed to successfully navigate P&T. Through a series of structured learning modules, and group-based feedback modules directly reviewing P&T portfolio content, participants will gain practical guidance on how to structure and prepare their portfolio to maximize positive reactions by P&T committee members, identify possible external review letter writers, determine how to describe their research and other professional accomplishments. All workshop information will be based on the largest available data set on promotion and tenure practices, and modules will include informational elements, group- and peer support, as well as office hours with the CEFA research team.

Course Name: GEN.702.2 - Path to Promotion: Navigating the Tenure Process for Faculty (Cohort for Academic Affairs Leaders)

Description: As an academic leader (department chair, dean, vice provost), you play a critical role in ensuring promotion and tenure processes are fair, and lead to the promotion of faculty most likely to succeed long-term.  This interactive and evidence-based workshop grounded in research findings generated by the NSF-funded Center for Excellence in Faculty Advancement (CEFA) ensures that university leaders are using state-of-the-art evidence to ascertain promotion policies and processes are grounded in the largest body of P&T data and published work. Grounded in more than 2,000 prior P&T cases across the country, our workshop equips academic leaders with the tools to ensure P&T policies and processes are fair, valid, and aligned with institutional values and policies. Our NSF-funded CEFA consortium has collected and analyzed data from 10 universities, including decision-making data from more than 2,000 promotion and tenure (P&T) cases and over 10,000 external review letters (ERLs). Drawing on our dataset and published CEFA work, the content of this workshop will provide academic leaders (department chairs, Deans, Vice Provosts) with insight into how evaluators make decisions, where inconsistencies may arise, and how leaders can proactively guide and support faculty towards a successful P&T outcome. Through a series of structured learning modules, participants will gain practical guidance on how to develop appropriate P&T policies for their respective units, interpret and apply institution/department P&T criteria, evaluate the quality and relevance of external review letters, support all faculty and particularly women and minority faculty, identify and learn how to mitigate bias in portfolio assessment and committee reviews, and learn to how strategically mentor faculty through the P&T process while also learning how to challenge and reshape institutional practices in the P&T process.
